How to get around Ulan-Ude and the republic.
Around the city
Ulan-Ude has buses and marshrutkas; pay the driver in cash or by card. Taxis are easiest to order through apps — fast and inexpensive.
Between towns and villages
Intercity buses and marshrutkas depart from the bus station. For popular destinations (Barguzin, Kurumkan, Kyakhta) it's best to buy tickets in advance during the season.
Car rental
Rentals are available in the city and at the airport. For long or mountain routes choose all-wheel drive; watch the forecast and keep fuel topped up — petrol stations are sparse in remote areas.
Good to know
Distances are large and some roads are unpaved. Plan extra time, keep cash on hand and download offline maps in advance — coverage isn't everywhere.
